abstract = "The Parque Estadual do Turvo (PET), located in south Brazil,
comprises an interesting remote sensing case study. From the
summer to winter, the leaf area index (LAI) decreases and the
solar zenith angle (SZA) increases with an annual amplitude larger
than 30°. In this study, we used a pair of RapidEye images
acquired in February (summer) and August (winter) of 2013 to
analyze the seasonal behavior of three vegetation indices (VIs):
the Red Edge Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (RENDVI), the
Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Enhanced
Vegetation Index (EVI). We applied linear spectral mixture models
to the surface reflectance of the RapidEye bands to inspect for
differences in shade fraction images. Differences in
summer-to-winter ratio images were obtained to discuss the
sensitivity of the indices to the coupled effects of LAI and SZA.
We projected the results over a digital elevation model (DEM) to
look for variations in local illumination conditions and resultant
effects on VIs determination. Results showed important changes in
shade fractions toward the winter due to the increase in canopy
shadows and in local topographic effects. The three VIs decreased
from the summer to winter, but those based on band-normalization
(RENDVI and NDVI) were less susceptible to topographic effects.",
